Papers of merchant and judge Samuel P. Savage of Boston and Weston, Mass., 1738-1797, contain business materials including receipts, requests for goods, invoices, and correspondence to his partner, David Jeffries; correspondence with Simon Frost and Nathaniel Sargent related to his religious devotion to the preaching of George Whitefield during the Great Awakening; papers related to his business as an insurance underwriter for goods on various ships; papers related to his position as chairman of the Massachusetts Board of War during the Revolutionary War such as accounts, receipts, and correspondence from Sam Adams, mostly about supplying the army; and legal documents from his tenure as a judge in Weston and justice of the peace in Middlesex County. Papers from other Savage family members, 1703-1738, include correspondence received by Lemuel Shaw from various relatives, wills, estate inventories, and legal documents. Collection also includes letters (many with typescripts) written by Gideon Hawley, Congregational minister and missionary to the Indians at Mashpee, Mass. to the Mass. House of Representatives and to Rev. Oakes and Susannah Shaw (in-laws to Hope Savage Shaw, granddaughter of S.P.S.), ca. 1770-1820. Hawley details the living conditions of the tribe, his view on their religious welfare, and petitions for the state to maintain guardianship. Also includes a letter received by Hawley when he was a military chaplain stationed at Lake George, sent from Jonathan Edwards, 1756; and a dictionary of Mashpee words, kept most likely by Hawley, ca. 1800's.
